The Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise is a charming country inn bed and breakfast located in North Conway, New Hampshire. Our commitment to exceptional innkeeping has earned us national recognition for our top-notch service, warm hospitality, and meticulous attention to detail.Nestled on over five acres of serene fields and forests, just two miles from the village of North Conway, The Buttonwood Inn on Mt. Surprise offers a tranquil rural setting with the convenience of being near all the attractions the area has to offer.
Housed in a beautifully restored 1820s farmhouse, our inn exudes a cozy country atmosphere, complete with wide pine floors, antique furnishings, charming quilts, and tasteful stenciling.
As proud members of the Select Registry since 1999, we are thrilled to be one of only 25 recipients of the esteemed Americas Favorite Inns Award. Our inn has also been featured in the "White Mountain Wonderland" article in Classic American Homes.
Our friendly innkeeper, Bill, is always available to assist you in planning your day, offering insider tips about the area, and sharing the best local ways to explore and experience North Conway.
During your stay, take a moment to relax at the inn with a good book. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife, such as deer, wild turkeys, moose, hawks, and hummingbirds. The Mt. Washington Valley offers a plethora of outdoor recreation and activities for you to enjoy, which you can find listed in our Area Activities section.
Indulge in a delightful afternoon tea accompanied by homemade treats in front of one of our traditional wood-burning fireplaces, located in our spacious living room or the cozy Mt. Surprise Room. On cooler days, you can bask in the warmth while choosing a comfortable spot in one of our Adirondack chairs. Alternatively, take a refreshing dip in our heated pool or unwind in our open-air hot tub, offering breathtaking views of the mountains and forest during the day and a mesmerizing starry sky at night. We would be delighted to assist you in making dinner plans at one of the many fantastic restaurants in the area, ranging from local favorites to international cuisine, all within a casual or fine dining atmosphere.

Directions
To get to the Inn from North Conway Village, turn east onto Kearsarge Street at the traffic light on Rt. 16. Drive for 1.5 miles until you reach a stop sign. Continue straight across the intersection onto Mt. Surprise Road, and follow the road up, bearing left, until you reach the Inn.
From Boston, take I-95 North to Portsmouth, NH, and then take the Spaulding Tpk. North until it ends. From there, take Rt. 16 to North Conway. Alternatively, you can take Rt. 93N to Exit 23 (Rt. 104E), and then take Rt. 25E to Rt. 16N to North Conway.
If you want to bypass the Shopping District, you can use the new North-South Road that connects Kearsarge Street with Route 302. Follow the directions from North Conway Village, or follow the instructions below.
For MapQuest, make sure to enter the address 64 Mt. Surprise Road, Bartlett, NH 03838. The GPS coordinates are 44°04'38.39"N, 71°07'10.07"W, and the elevation is 700 feet.
From New York City, take the NY thruway North (Major Deegan) to Rt. 287 East to 684 North to I-84 East. Then take I-90 (MA Tpk.) East to Rt. 290 North (Exit 10). Follow 290 North to I-495 to I-95, and then follow the directions from Boston.
If you are coming from Portland, Maine, travel west on Route 302 until you reach North Conway. Then follow the directions to bypass the Shopping District or the directions from North Conway Village.
From Montreal, travel east to Sherbrooke and then head south on I-91. Follow the directions below.
For travelers from the Northwest, take I-91 South to St. Johnsbury, VT, and then take I-93 South to Littleton, NH. From there, take Rt. 302 East through Crawford Notch. Route 302 will merge with Rt. 16 from the North in Glen. Continue south on Route 302/16. After about 3.3 miles, look for a highway sign for "The Buttonwood Inn - Hurricane Mt. Road". Take the SECOND left, and go 0.3 miles. Turn left onto Hurricane Mt. Road and drive 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Mt. Surprise Road and you will see a black highway sign for The Buttonwood Inn pointing left. Bear left, and the road will become dirt. The Inn's sign will be straight ahead, and the driveway is just to the right of the sign.
If you are coming from I-93 in Lincoln, NH, during the summer (May to mid-November), take the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) for approximately 24 miles. Then turn left onto Bear Notch Road. Note that Bear Notch Road is closed in the winter. Follow Bear Notch Rd. until you reach a blinking light in the center of Bartlett. Turn right at the light onto Rt. 302 East, and follow the directions from Glen mentioned above. This route offers great scenery and avoids North Conway traffic. In the winter, take the Kancamagus Highway (Rt. 112) to the end in Conway at the intersection of Rt. 16. Then follow the directions below to bypass North Conway's shopping district.
If you are traveling from the South and want to bypass the Shopping District, take Rt. 16 and at the first set of traffic lights in Conway, turn left onto Washington St. After half a mile, bear left at the fork onto West Side Rd. Follow this road until it ends at a stop sign, then turn right onto River Road. Continue straight through the stop lights. At the stop sign in front of John Fuller school, turn right, and at the next stop sign, turn left onto Mechanic Street. At the subsequent stop sign, turn left onto Kearsarge Street. Then follow the directions from North Conway Village.
For those arriving by air, it takes approximately 1.5 hours from Portland, ME, 2.5 hours from Manchester, NH, and 3 hours from Boston, MA.
